How much money do book editors make on average?

    310
I would like to be a book editor when I graduate from college, but I was wondering how much money do book editors make on average? I'm asking because I want to be able to live pretty comfortably (a nice house/appartment, food, heating, pets, etc) on my own, and I want to know if I would have enough money to do that. Also, should I major in English? I know that sounds like a stupid question, but is it usually required that the person wanting to be a book editor majored in English? Thank you!

    Harvard University??? Ivy Leagues?

    977
Well, I have been aspiring to get into Harvard or any of the Ivy's for as long as I can remember. I'm in 10th grade, but I already have countless questions regarding the admissions process and requirements specifically, so here goes- 1) Currently, I am one of the top 5 students in my grade according to GPA (my last average was 101.56%), and have been throughout High school thus far. I know grades and academics for me will not be a big deal. I am also one of the 20 select students to take an AP class this year. Is this good enough? 2) Standardized Testing- I took the PSAT earlier this year, overall score was 175. However, I am still not sure if I want to take ACT or SAT. Do these schools (especially Harvard) genuinely care which test you submit to them? I think I might do better on the ACT since I am better at Math and sciences. Or what if I decide to take them both but do poorer on one, do I still have to show them the bad score and will this influence my acceptance? This spring I will probably be taking two SAT subject tests, as well. 3) Extracurricular- Just recently, I founded our school's first ever Chemistry club, and naturally, am the president and leader of it. I had a major role in our production of the musical "Grease". Also, since the start of 9th grade, I have been part of the translation crew, and translate messages and documents quite frequently. What else do you think I need in this department? Should I become captain of some sports team (I could start a tennis team) or should I do something outside of school? If outside of school, what we be a good way to do some community involvement, something that would not require a long commitment, just so I could say I did whatever (I live in New York by the way). Also, I have been tutoring other kids in math privately for a few months now. I am also applying for an honors science program at Columbia University, a very prestigious program for high school students in the NY area. So? What do you think? What are my chances of getting into one of them? And thanks to all who read everything. I appreciate your help!! =D

Best Answer:  Graduating at the top of your class will look very good. But it won't guarantee you admission. There are around 65,000 high schools in the U.S. That means 65,000 valedictorians, 65,000 salutatorians, 65,000 class presidents, drum majors and school newspaper editors. Last year, the eight Ivy League schools combined admitted a total of 23,010 freshmen. Thousands of valedictorians were rejected. But many students who were not #1 or #2 in their class did get accepted. Bottom line: aim for the best grades and highest rank you can, but don't imagine that it's a ticket into an Ivy. On the other hand, if you don't finish first in your class, don't think you've blown your chance.

AP Classes: Some high schools offer a ton of AP classes; some only offer a few, and some don't offer any. So the specific number of AP classes you take is immaterial. What matters is how many your school offered, and how many you took advantage of. Colleges will be able to see what AP courses were available to you, and they'll want to see that you've chosen the most rigorous schedule you could.

SAT/ACT: Colleges don't prefer one over the other. They'll accept either one, and they look at both tests equally. Many students find that they do better on one than the other, so it's wise to take them both. You can send the colleges both test scores, or you can choose to send the one you did better on. You can also take the tests multiple times, if you want to try and raise your score. Either way, you'll do better if you spend some time doing practice tests, taking a test prep class, or working with a tutor.

Extracurriculars: Rather than writing a big long thing here, I'm going to direct you to a GREAT video that explains how colleges look at extracurriculars. It's directed towards parents, but high school students can learn a lot from it. You'll also notice that it includes some advertising for this guy's SAT Prep classes, but the info he provides is EXCELLENT and very true and will really help you understand the whole application process. College Acceptance?

    412
ok, i'm a highschooler freaking out about college acceptances. i'm looking for an unbiased, honest, true-to-the-best-of-your-knowledge opinion about the potential i have to get into some top schools. i've had my eye set on yale since 1st grade when my teacher said once, "i'll see you graduating from yale one day." i blame her for all of the stress that comes with that! i know how grossly competitive they are, as are all the Ivies, but i have my eye on the ivy level schools (brown, georgetown, upenn, amherst, upenn, princeton, etc.) ok, about me. i'm a pretty good student, currently ranked 2nd in my class with a 4.65 ish gpa. i'm class president, (oh i'm a sophomore by the way), have about 200 hours of community service (half way to my goal of 500), i'm heavily involved in our school's band along with 4 other ensembles my school has to offer and am looking at being band president soon. i'm currently our assistant section leader (in perspective, impressive to have as a sophomore, but otherwise insignificant). i serve as a student rep on our board of ed., am in about 10 clubs, and am heavily involved in the theatre department. all honors classes, early acceptance (as a sophomore) into the school's elite acting/performance classes, etc etc, all that good stuff. i'm attending a leadership conference as the single rep from the school soon, and am hopefully being considered for more (unfortunately, many are only available to juniors). i'm a pretty good kid, you see, kind of doing everything i can with what i have. lots of kids are like this, undoubtedly. i'm whiter than a saltine cracker (does my 1/64 cherokee native american count???) and am part of the upper-lower class, economically. we don't have much money, but aren't begging on the streets, you know? my psat scores were mediocre for a first time and i will definitely be getting them up. i'm RIDICULOUSLY ambitious and determined to do whatever i set my mind to, but i know that everyone else applying to these schools is as well. but here's the issue: i'm a normal kid. i stay up late to gossip with my friends and fail math quizzes occasionally (i am NO math prodigy). i feel like everyone getting into these schools has won 3 nobel peace prizes by the time they could read chapter books, and here i am. i haven't cured cancer, won the intel science award, or adopted any small african child to raise as my own (though i would love to have the opportunity to; i want to go into international relations and diplomacy). honestly, is there anything here? am i just a mediocre highschool kid with too high hopes? i don't want my guidance counselor, though an honest woman of course, saying, "oh sweetie, of course you can do it!" because she's my guidance counselor. i want some real opinions. now, please don't go ripping my self esteem down like the berlin wall, but some suggestions for the future would be great. thanks in advance, xo

Best Answer:  I'm not going to rip your self-esteem, but you asked for an honest answer so here goes:

    1) No, your 1/64 Cherokee ancestry doesn't count.

    2) Your good grades, rigorous courses, class rank, and extracurricular achievements are great, and good enough to get your application considered at any school. You didn't mention your SAT/ACT scores; that will play a big role. But assuming they are equal to your academic performance, you will be a competitive applicant at the schools on your list.

    3) There are over 60,000 high schools in the U.S. That's 60,000 valedictorians, 60,000 salutatorians, 60,000 class presidents, drum majors and school newspaper editors. Last year, the eight Ivy League schools combined admitted a total of 23,010 freshmen (and not all of them were #1 or #2 in their class). My point being: you may be a top student at your school, but there are countless others with achievements that are identical to yours. Way more than the top schools have room for. So being competitive isn't enough. You have to be compelling. You need something that makes you stand out from the others and makes a school want YOU instead of someone else similar to you.

    4) Curing cancer or finding the answer to world peace aren't the only things that can make a school want you. Colleges are diverse communities - small worlds unto themselves - and they want students with all sorts of skills and talents; students who will contribute something special to the campus community, making it a more vibrant and enriching place for everyone. They don't want clones, they want variety: writers, entrepreneurs, singers, actors, scientists, musicians, mathematicians, artists, philanthropists, athletes, etc. They don't expect anyone to do all of these things, but they do want people who are REALLY GOOD at something. And the top colleges have the luxury of selecting people who are the BEST at whatever it is they're into. You need to identify something that you can really stand out in, and focus on making yourself the best you can be at it.

    5) Here's a great video that will give you some insight into what colleges want and how they go about getting it. It's aimed toward parents, but students can get a lot out of it, too. Watch it all the way through; the most helpful parts come toward the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t16IK0T75...

Best Answer:  Yes, you need Photoshop or a similar graphics editor.

Though I am more of a digital painter than a graphic designer, I can say that they probably just used separate layers for each of the white rectangles, and added a "drop shadow effect" using the "blending options".

The background was probably an image that was masked out by hand using a texture brush; hue and saturation adjusted via the various color adjustment menus; and shaded by hand using a soft brush with a dark color, possibly a bit of color burn as well. Then of course finishing touches and details (like the airplanes) by hand, most likely.

Best Answer:  From the US Department of Labor site listed below, you can find the following info about earnings for production people in television. Announcers fall into a different category, but you can find the whole publication of the 2008-2009 Occupational Outlook Handbook at the second link below. Sometimes you have to look around a bit to find what you want, but it has lots of info. Like television announcer is listed under announcer, not television announcer. Check it out. The book has the nature of the work, the environment you work in, hours you might work in a given occupation, and lots more. Anyway, here's the info you were looking for.

Median annual earnings for television, video, and motion picture camera operators were $40,060 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $26,930 and $59,440. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $18,810, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $84,500. Median annual earnings were $44,010 in the motion picture and video industries and $32,200 in radio and television broadcasting.

Median annual earnings for film and video editors were $46,670 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $30,610 and $74,650. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $22,710, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $110,720. Median annual earnings were $53,580 in the motion picture and video industries, which employed the largest numbers of film and video editors.

Many camera operators who work in film or video are freelancers, whose earnings tend to fluctuate each year. Because most freelance camera operators purchase their own equipment, they incur considerable expense acquiring and maintaining cameras and accessories. Some camera operators belong to unions, including the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians.

Best Answer:  You have to change the far clipping plane in the camera attributes. So make sure you're looking at the window for your perspective (I'm assuming it's perspective because that's usually where this problem happens), and then go to the menu "View", then "Camera Attribute Editor...".
In the new window, under the "camera attributes" heading you should see "near clip plane" and "far clip plane"
the Far Clip Plane is the one you need to change. A good number to stick with is 10000.000 You should definitely be able to see what you're working on with that. If you need to go higher, your model is too big (I don't think you'll need to go higher though, because you said it was the grid disappearing)
I would also change the Near clip Plane while you're at it to 0.010. (this helps when you're trying to model really close up, so the camera won't crash into the geo)
