how to compile a program in cygwin?

Best Answer:  Cygwin includes GCC -- or the last time I checked it did. So you should be able to compile things as soon as you have it installed. You then treat your command box as a UNIX shell prompt, compiling with:

g++ -o progname progname.cpp replacing progname with the name of your program.

    http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/programm...

This is of course the Cygwin guide, and Chapter 2 is about installing it:

    http://cygwin.com/cygwin-ug-net/cygwin-u...

GCC comes with several tools, such as the GNU DeBuggerr -- gdb and gprof a profiling utility which make it pretty easy to work it without an ide. If your results are wrong recompile it with -g and then open your executable with "gdb myprog" replacing myprog of course, and then set a breakpoint early, run it through the break point and step through the rest of the program till you figure out what went wrong. If you use notepad you can keep the source code open while you do it.

There is another utility called make which you can use to create programs sometimes out of multiple files. Here is a tutorial for that:

    http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/Tutor/Make/

Cygwin may not be the easiest programming environment but it is a powerful one and worth knowing.

Best Answer:  'Cygwin' emulates a Unix terminal in Windows. This basically means that you can use parts of a Unix (linux-based operating systems like Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora) terminal, on a Windows command prompt (you can open this by running "cmd.exe").

The advantages of using Cygwin depend on what you're using it for; for example, if you wanted to write a script to check how many files contain the word, "cheese", Cygwin would be better than a Windows Command Prompt due to its commands such as 'grep' and syntax ('for' loops in files). This would be possible in either terminal, but might be quicker in a Unix one (with Cygwin).

Please understand that Unix-based terminals, Cygwin and even Command Prompt are far, far, more than just a set of commands. There are many resources to learn how to use these tools to their full extent, but here are a few of my personal favourites:

http://mally.stanford.edu/~sr/computing/basic-unix.html - Teaches very basic Unix-based terminal commands. A good introduction to using them.

http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Teaching/Unix/ - A set of lessons on using Unix terminals to their fullest extent.

http://ss64.com/ - A reference to many different terminals, such as bash (commands for Linux-based terminals), CMD and OS X.

    Good luck!

Best Answer:  Cygwin is a collection of tools originally developed by Cygnus Solutions to allow versions of Microsoft Windows to behave in ways familiar to Unix users. Programs supported by Cygwin work well on Windows NT, and some run acceptably on Windows 9x. While Cygwin provides header files and libraries that make it possible to recompile or to port Unix applications for use on computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems, it does not make binaries compatible with such computers running without Cygwin.

Cygwin is currently maintained by employees of Red Hat, NetApp and others. Christopher Faylor is currently the manager of the Cygwin development team. Released under the GNU General Public License, Cygwin is free software.

How heavy is the programming software 'Cygwin(version 1.7.5)' and Ccompiler 'gcc'?

    546
If my wording is unclear, please feel free to ask. I'm thinking of downloading Cygwin and gcc to learn to program in C. I have a textbook based on Cygwin and I'm positive it's Cygwin I want to use, so I'm not asking for advice on which software or Ccompiler to use. It's just that my computer is full of clutter, so I'm kinda worried I don't have enough space for it. If anyone knows how heavy the version 1.7.5 Cygwin and gcc are, I would be much obliged. The website for Cygwin is http://www.cygwin.com there's an icon at the top right where you can download the software.

Best Answer:  Cygwin is just a platform that lets you run linux-commands under Linux, among them gcc. If you really want to sink you teeth into gcc -- and eventually make programs for Linux -- installing Linux and running gcc from there would probably be a better option. You would have more libraries available to you, and it would be easier to make X (GUI) programs. Some libraries (like Qt from Nokia) makes it easy to make programs that can be made to run both under Linux and Windows.

If you plan on making Windows programs (i.e. GUI programs to run under Windows) Cygwin wouldn't be my first choice. However, to learn fundamental programming, it should do just fine.

GCC with it's C and C++ are good compilers, and follows the current standards very well; so you'll certainly learn to write "correct" code. The imediate drawback is perhaps that it's command-line driven, and some of the options you must use are not that easy to remember -- e.g. when adding additional libraries and include-files.

Warnings and errors may also be a bit obscure, and although there is a debugger (gdb) it too uses a command-line interface and is not very easy to use.

You'll need a good editor to edit your programs in, one that let you find the lines where the compiler indicate problems. Emacs (available in cygwin) should be good. I would also suggest installing X (the Linux GUI) under Cygwin, so you can use Emacs in X-mode (emacs can both run in a terminal and under X).

Best Answer:  Cygwin is a Unix emulator for the MS Windows environment. Go to the Cygwin site (sources.redhat.com/cygwin) and run the installation program. In addition to selecting the "Base" packages, also select GCC from the "Development" section.

Then, just write your code in a text editor, fire up Cygwin from the installed icon on your desktop, and run gcc like you would from any Linux system.

Best Answer:  I think the default minimum install includes what you need. Open Setup, click View if needed to get a Category view, and under Devel make sure you have:

    * the GNU C compiler (gcc4-core)
    * the GNU tools (binutils, make)
    * the GNU debugger (gdb), and perhaps an editor that will handle Unix-style line endings if you don't already have one. You probably also want the GNU debugger (gdb) and make (make).
    * Optional: C++ (gcc4-g++) and other compilers (ada, fortran, objective c)

I don't bother with MinGW under Cygwin. You don't need to develp Windows tools in a Posix environment. The regular MinGW/MSYS work just fine,

I disagree with jbaksta on one issue: Running Linux under a VM isn't faster than running a Cygwin app. I find it's quite the reverse, at least with Ubuntu running in a VirtualBox machine. Otherwise, I agree that MinGW is a nicer tool for using GCC in Windows. I use both, though, and putting the cygwin\bin folder in the system path makes most of the Cygwin executables available in a CMD window, as well.

With Cygwin or MinGW, one nice tool for editing and running programs is Code::Blocks. It can use either the MinGW or Cygwin tools to compile and debug. Others like DevC++, but I haven't used it. There is C/C++ project support in Eclipse and NetBeans, but those are primarily Java IDEs and I don't care much for their C/C++ editors. You can make up your own mind, though. These aren't specifically Cygwin development tools...just cross-platform tools whose windows versions will use the Cygwin compilers and debugger.

    Making an Equation in Cygwin?

I need to "Create a program that outputs the result of the formula f = (a – b)(x – y) using the printf() functions" in Cygwin. I need to "declare floating point variables and initialize them as a=8.1, b=4.1, x=3, y=3.5" I'm really not sure how to go about doing this, help would be appreciated.
    asked

Best Answer:  Cygwin is not a programming language. What language re you using? The printf() function appears in both the C and C++ standard libraries, and also is a function in bash shell scripts.

So, the first thing you need to do is go back over your reading and lecture notes to find out all of what you're supposed to do. There will probably be examples that you are expected to follow.

The C statement to declare and initialize those variables would be:

    double a=8.1, b=4.1, x=3, y.3.5;

Your notes may say to use "float" instead of "double". That's a bad habit from the old days, but you should follow the guidelines you're given. The operator for multiplication in C and most other languages, is *, so you'll computing (a - b)*(x - y). Multiplication is not implied, as it is in algebra. You have to explicitly write the operator symbol, every time.

Hope that helps, and happy hunting.

Best Answer:  Open up the Cygwin BASH shell and issue these commands:

whoami (this will tell you the account name you're using, which is typically derived from your Windows login information)

Use pico (or vi if you're versed in it) like so:

    pico /etc/passwd

Go to the line that has the user name as reported by the "whoami" above and change the path; The default is /home, which resides in cgywin\home, as represented via DOS or Windows.

Assuming you wanted to change your home directory to another drive, say "d:" as represented in Windows or DOS, you would change your home directory to read:

    /cygdrive/d/some/directory/yourhome

    Problems with Textpad and Cygwin?

    953
I just started my first programming class in college. The instructor wants us to use Textpad and Cygwin to create programs. I followed the instructions she gave to us and also the instructions from a link she gave us. I am 99% sure I have followed every thing detailed exactly. The first assignment she gave us was to create a simple program that just says "Hello World". However when I try to compile to g++ I get an error. First it asks "Can only redirect output from console applications. Continue anyway?" After selecting yes I get the error: "Access is denied" The window is labeled C:\cygwin\bin\g++.exe. I will leave the link she gave us to the instructions. We were told to follow steps A-H as well as step J. Not sure if there is an error somewhere in the instructions or if I am doing something wrong. I have checked everything and it appears to be correct. Also I am running Windows 7. Thanks for any help. Best Answer:  It works fine for me, and thank you. I hadn't tried setting this up for g++ before.

One thing you might verify. If you're going to run Cygwin binaries from a Windows environment (like TextPad) then you need to either (a) add c:\cygwin\bin to your PATH environment variable, or (b) copy cygwin.dll to %windir%\system32 or some other directory that's in your search path. I prefer (a) since that makes cygwin commands (except for the bash builtins) available at the CMD prompt. (Should I call that environment "Winux"?)

Edit: Uh, I just reread the question. Make that: "It works fine for me on XP..." I'll check Win7 later if I get a chance. If you update the details, add whether you're using 32 or 64 bit Win7.

Edit: Just got my son to try it on his notebook with WIn7/64 and get the same access error, but not the redirection error. His TextPad isn't properly installed though, so we tried launching Cygwin g++-3.exe from CMD to simulate being launched out of TextPad. That's where we got the access problems, even when running as administrator with an elevated-privilege CMD shell. (Tried that both ways.)

I guess the other answer is best...contact your instructor. I didn't see help on the first couple of Google pages, either. Maybe it's on page 10?

    Good luck...

Final edit?: Just a thought...is there a way to configure TextPad to run in XP emulation mode? You need a computer that supports emulation, and a (free) download from MS to make that work.

Cygwin consists of a collection of various tools and libraries aimed to provide a Linux-like environment on Windows Operating System. It acts as an emulation layer, making it possible to run native Linux applications on Microsoft Windows. Cygwin consists of a DLL whose purpose is to provide POSIX API functionality and a collection of utilities that are able to accommodate the Unix look and feel on Windows computers.
